Test IBAN generator: fake IBANs for DE, AT, CH and NL

Generate test IBANs for forms, demos and software tests: the checksum is valid, but the bank code is a placeholder instead of a real bank. Everything runs in your browser.

Generate test IBANs

Result (0 IBANs)

Repeatable with seed 1. All values are test data.

Test data: the bank code is a placeholder. 00000000 (DE) cannot belong to any bank; 00000 (AT, CH) and TEST (NL) are, to our knowledge, not assigned to any bank. These IBANs are not suitable for real payments. “Valid checksum” only means that the modulo 97 check passes.

What this generator produces

Every IBAN consists of a country code, two check digits and the national account identifier. The generator uses a bank identifier that does not exist, appends a random account number and calculates the check digits so that the IBAN passes the modulo 97 check. The structure of a German IBAN is explained on the IBAN validator page, which also shows what a passed check does and does not prove.

What the values are not

  • Format-valid: length and characters match the structure of the country.
  • Checksum-valid: the modulo 97 check passes.
  • Not issued: there is no account. The IBAN is not suitable for transfers or direct debits.

For developers: the sample shop database contains customers with payments that use such test IBANs, as JSON, CSV and PostgreSQL SQL.

Frequently asked questions

Are the generated IBANs real?
No. German bank codes start with a clearing digit from 1 to 8, so an IBAN with bank code 00000000 cannot belong to a real account even though its checksum is correct. The placeholders 00000 (AT, CH) and TEST (NL) are, to our knowledge, not assigned to any bank; we did not find an official confirmation.
Why does the checksum pass anyway?
The two check digits after the country code are calculated from the rest of the IBAN (modulo 97). We calculate them correctly so that forms and validators that only check the checksum accept the values.
Why does my system still reject the IBAN?
Some systems also check that the bank code appears in the Bundesbank list, or they ask a payment service. In that case use a test IBAN from your provider, for example from its developer documentation.
Can I test payments with these IBANs?
Not real payment flows. Use the sandbox of your payment provider with the test values documented there.
What is the “deliberately wrong checksum” option for?
It lets you test error handling: your form should reject these IBANs and say clearly that the checksum is wrong.
